CMS is Reviewing MIPS Data for Physicians and Extending the Deadline
The Deadline for Data Submission Has Been Extended
The Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services CMS is allowing more time for physicians to
participate in the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System MIPS 2022 submissions to utilize an
excessive and uncontrollable circumstance (EUC) waiver order that limits the
negative impact of the high-quality information to their frauds.
Doctors, digital
teams, and as well as others have the last date of 31st March to apply for the
MIPS EUC waiver. If the waiver is granted then they do have the other option to
reweight information to the other account for the COVID-19 impacts. If the team
of physicians does not submit the information they won’t give you a penalty.
All of the
applicants need an access role of HCQIPS and HARP profile account just to
complete and submit an exception applies.
Well, according to
the CMS groups and virtual groups can’t be able to apply to override data that
has already been submitted. Any submission of data even before and after an
application has been approved will be able to score. The group or virtual group
will earn a final score equal to the performance threshold if only one
performance category can be scored, meaning the other three performance
categories are weighted at 0%.
The MIPS-eligible
clinicians in the group will receive the neutral payment adjustment until they
have a higher score from the individual participation and an APM entity.
MIPS-eligible clinicians participating in the virtual group always get the
virtual group score.
What’s the Reaction?
This move shows the
positive reaction of the American Medical Association, which has agreed that
the physicians and administrative staff needed flexibility this year when they
are filing a MIPS EUC hardship application due to the Omicron surge.
The original E&C
hardship application deadline at the end of 2021 coincided with the rise in
COVID cases and demands, according to Dr. Gerald Harmon, immediate past chair
of the AMA Board of Trustees. "As a result, doctors might have been
subject to a payment reduction and missed the chance to submit a hardship
application. Physicians, particularly APM participants, will experience much-needed
relief from the reopening of the 2021 application period, which will also help
them avoid a negative 2023 MIPS payment adjustment."
A physician,
practice, or physician/practice component of an APM should apply if they are
unsure of their status, he continued, to avoid being penalized. A 2023 penalty
will not be applied to doctors who do not submit any MIPS data for the 2021
MIPS program.
Larger Trend
For programs like
MIPS, Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations, the Hospital
Inpatient and Outpatient Quality Reporting Programs, Hospital Readmissions
Reduction Program, Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program, and Skilled Nursing
Facility Quality Reporting Program, CMS implemented extreme and uncontrollable
circumstances policy exceptions and extensions for measure-reporting and
data-submission deadlines in 2020.
Officials from the
CMS stated at the time that the organization "seeks to hold organizations
harmless for not submitting data during this period" and "recognizes
that quality measure data collection and reporting for services furnished
during this period may not be reflective of their true level of performance on
measures such as cost, readmissions, and patient experience during this time of
emergency."

"What are the key updates and implications of the CMS reviewing MIPS data for physicians and extending the deadline?"
ReplyDeleteIn September 2021, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) had implemented the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) to evaluate and adjust Medicare payments for eligible healthcare professionals based on performance measures. However, I cannot provide specific details or implications regarding any recent updates or deadline extensions beyond that date. To obtain the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend referring to official CMS announcements, their website, or contacting the CMS directly for the latest updates on the review of MIPS data for physicians and any related deadline extensions.
